Key stats for Serie A
The Catenaccio is back! After three consecutive seasons of over a thousand goals, Serie A’s only managed a total of 979 goals in the 2015/16 season . The Italian championship has a poor record of 2.58 goals per match which makes it one of the less exciting championships (behind Ligue1) among the five major competitions in Europe.
Each team is fighting for the top spot, 1 in 4 meetings end without a score. The advantage is with the home team where teams have 46% of success. With Juventus present, other clubs must be particularly careful!
What to know before betting on Serie A
In Italy, there is Juventus and then there is the rest. The Turin club were once again champions, having lost only one since November 2015. They finished undefeated last year, Gigi Buffon is unknown to defeat, especially in his first match against Udinese. Juventus have scored in 34 of their 38 games in 2015/2016, that’s 90% of matches played.
Behind Juventus, Naples rises from the ashes and attempts to step up to the second step of the podium. Neck and neck in the early stages with the future champions, the Neapolitans were not able to keep pace with Juve. The departure of goal scorer Higuain (36 goals in 2015/2016) to the Turin’s rivals, however, could be fatal this season.
Fourth best championship in the Europe, Serie A is gradually returning to where it once was. And thanks to its top clubs: Juventus who have been untouchable and reached the finals of the Champions League with the company of Roma . Naples and Inter also emerging as serious contenders after an encouraging 2015/16 season. It may also be the year Fiorentina and AC Milan come out of the shadows. Finally, Lazio, who were very disappointing last year, could spring a surprise after an interesting transfer window.
At the end of the season, the two leading teams get their chance to compete in the group stage of the Champions League, the third place finisher, must go through a preliminary round to advance. Europa League places go to the two in fourth and fifth place. As for relegation, it is unfortunately the last three that go down to the lower league.
